How AI Is Changing Visibility for New Hampshire Local Businesses

by | New Hampshire, Trends

AI is changing how people find local businesses, through AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT. Here's what it means for NH, and what to do.

Bottom Line Up Front: What AI Changes

  • Google’s AI Overviews and standalone tools like ChatGPT and Claude are increasingly answering local search questions directly, sometimes without a single click to your website
  • AI Overviews and Chat tools aren’t the same thing: one lives inside a Google search, the other skips search entirely
  • The old goal, rank #1, isn’t enough anymore. The new goal is getting mentioned by name, wherever someone’s asking
  • Visibility today relies on SEO fundamentals done well: clean structured content, real reviews, and consistent information across the web

What’s Changing in Local Search

Search used to mean typing something into Google and getting ten blue links to click through. I’ll admit I miss that simplicity some days. Now “search” is really two different things happening at once. Google itself increasingly answers questions directly on the results page, before anyone scrolls to a website. And a growing number of people are skipping the search results page entirely, going straight to ChatGPT, Claude, or a similar tool and asking their question there instead. Both change the same basic thing: your business’s name either gets said out loud in an AI-generated answer, or it doesn’t, and there’s often no click involved either way.

AI Overviews: Still Part of Search

AI Overviews are Google’s own AI-generated summary, sitting right in the search results above the traditional listings. It’s still technically a Google search, someone typed a query into Google, but a growing share of the time, Google answers it directly instead of sending them to a list of websites to click through. For a New Hampshire business competing for “best plumber in Manchester” or something like it, the AI’s summary might be the only thing that searcher ever sees.

Because AI Overviews live inside Google Search, they lean heavily on the same signals traditional SEO has always rewarded: a crawlable, well-structured site, real reviews, and consistent business information. If your site is already doing local SEO well, you’re already most of the way toward showing up here too.

AI Chat Tools: ChatGPT, Claude, and Similar

This is a different animal, and it’s growing fast. Instead of typing a question into Google, more people are opening ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or a similar tool and asking directly: “what’s a good SEO agency in New Hampshire” or “recommend a plumber near Manchester, NH.” There’s no search results page at all, just an answer, and your business either gets named in it or it doesn’t.

These tools each work a little differently. Some can browse the live web when they answer a question; others draw more from their training data and periodic updates, and most fall somewhere in between depending on the question. What they have in common is that they lean on the same kind of trust signals AI Overviews do, just pulled from a wider net—your own site, but also directories, review platforms, local news mentions, and anywhere else your business is talked about online. A business with a thin, inconsistent, or outdated presence across the web is much easier to leave out of that answer entirely.

This space is newer and moving faster than AI Overviews, and nobody, including the platforms themselves, has it fully figured out yet.

Why This Matters More for Local Businesses Than You’d Think

Here’s the part I find encouraging. National brands have the content volume and backlink profiles to dominate almost any AI summary on a broad topic. A New Hampshire plumber can’t out-publish a national home services brand, and trying to would be a waste of a marketing budget. But a national brand doesn’t have a real answer for “who do I call in Manchester,” and a local business with clear, verified, consistent information does. That specificity is exactly what AI tools are looking for once a question gets local.

AI tools tend to favor businesses with clear, structured, verifiable information over ones with a thin or inconsistent web presence. That’s genuinely a more level playing field than traditional SEO’s raw content-volume race, where whoever publishes the most wins by attrition. A small, well-documented, actively maintained local business has a real shot here.

What NH Businesses Can Do About It

Get the basics rock solid

Your business name, address, and phone number need to match (exactly) across your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you’re listed in. AI tools cross-reference this information, and inconsistency reads as untrustworthy.

Build content that directly answers questions

Pages and posts written around the questions your customers ask, in plain language, tend to get pulled into AI summaries more often than vague marketing copy. If you wouldn’t say it out loud to a customer standing in front of you, an AI tool probably isn’t going to quote it back to someone searching either.

Structure your content so it’s easy to extract

AI tools pull information more easily from content that’s clearly organized. That means descriptive headings, short direct answers near the top of a page, and FAQ sections written in plain language. A wall of unstructured text is harder for an AI tool to summarize accurately, even when all the right information is technically buried in there somewhere.

Keep your Google Business Profile active

Reviews, posts, and accurate hours all feed into how AI tools understand your business. A profile that hasn’t been touched in a year is a weak signal, even if everything on it happens to still be correct.

Get listed and reviewed consistently

Beyond your own site, AI tools draw on third-party sources: directories, review platforms, local news mentions. Being listed accurately and reviewed regularly across those sources reinforces the same trust signals as your Google Business Profile, just from outside your own website, which matters more for chat tools than it ever did for traditional search.

Don’t panic, and don’t chase hacks

This space is moving fast, and anyone promising a guaranteed way to hack AI Overviews or ChatGPT is selling something. I’d be skeptical of anyone claiming certainty here right now, us included, on anything that specific. The businesses that hold up over time are the ones building a genuinely trustworthy web presence, not the ones gaming a system that changes monthly, sometimes without warning.

If all this seems overwhelming, we offer affordable local business programs to help you stay on top of all these fundamentals.

A Few Misconceptions Worth Clearing Up

“AI means SEO doesn’t matter anymore.”

Not true, and I’d push back on anyone telling you otherwise. AI tools still lean heavily on the same signals traditional SEO has always rewarded: relevance, trust, and structure. This is an evolution of the work, not a replacement for it.

“There’s a quick trick to getting featured.”

Also not true, or at least not a durable one. The businesses showing up consistently are the ones with genuinely strong, well-structured information, not the ones chasing a loophole that closes in a month anyway.

“This only matters for big brands.”

The opposite may be closer to true for local businesses. AI tools often favor specific, verifiable local information over generic corporate copy, which is an advantage a well-optimized small business can genuinely use against a much bigger competitor.

Where This Fits Into Your Broader SEO Strategy

AI search visibility isn’t a replacement for traditional SEO, it’s layered on top of it, whether that’s Google’s AI Overviews or a standalone chat tool. The businesses that were already doing local SEO well, structured content, strong reviews, technical fundamentals, are the ones best positioned as this shift keeps moving. This is exactly why we treat AI search visibility as baked into our NH SEO work, not sold separately as some kind of add-on package. It’s one piece of the fuller organic visibility strategy we build for New Hampshire businesses, alongside web design and SEO. Here’s the full picture of how it fits together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?

For some searches, yes, especially broad informational questions where the AI Overview fully answers the query on its own. For local, service-specific searches, businesses that show up in the summary can still see strong click-through, especially when the AI response names them directly.

Do I need to do anything different for ChatGPT or Claude versus Google AI Overviews?

Mostly no, the fundamentals overlap heavily. The one real difference is that chat tools lean more on your presence across the wider web, directories, reviews, mentions, since there’s no click for them to send, just an answer they’re putting together from whatever they can find about you.

How do I know if my business is showing up in AI answers?

Search your own key terms directly in Google, ChatGPT, and Claude, and see who gets mentioned. It’s not a perfect measurement, but it’s a reasonable starting check you can do yourself in five minutes.
